Leak confirms Google's Amazon Dot rival - 'Google Home Mini'

The smart speaker will go on sale from October 19. When you combine that concept with the ability to control your TV and various devices (lights, thermostat, etc.) through voice, it's easy to see how Google Home Mini could effectively make your home far more connected.

Google has launched a smaller version of its Google Home smart speaker today, as the Home Mini. The puck-sized fabric covered speaker is priced $49 and will start retailing in U.S. stores from October 19 and is right now available for pre-order. The speaker will come with an ad-free subscription to YouTube Music for 12 months.

It has two 4.5-inch woofers on board and two 0.7 inch customer tweeters. Of course, you use the Google Home app to set everything up - and it couldn't be simpler.

Like Apple with the HomePod, Google is promising that its Max speaker will learn the user's musical tastes so it can become a digital DJ that automatically selects tunes that you'll enjoy. It comes in Chalk (Black), Charcoal (Gray), and Coral (Red).

The Google Home Mini has been leaked in full detail earlier and, as expected, it is a smaller version of the Google Home smart speaker with built-in Google Assistant. Google is also collaborating with production houses such as Warner Brothers and Disney Pictures to bring customized experiences for children.

Max has the inventively named smart sound, which is exactly how it sounds.

Google Voice Match - the newly introduced feature that recognises individual voices - will be rolling out to all 7 countries the speaker is available in.

Max supports YouTube Music, Spotify, Google Play Music, Pandora, iHeart Radio, and TuneIn, and will play music via Cast, Bluetooth, or stereo aux input from a home stereo. We'd expect it to come out in Q1-Q2 2018, though, with United Kingdom pricing to sit at around £399.

Winner: Draw. If you want to add voice control to your Sonos system or a single existing speaker via line-in, the Echo Dot is best.
