The median age at diagnosis for all USA women with breast cancer is 62 years.

During October, the company aims to make a difference with its annual Pink Sale in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Women aged 50 years and older account for 81 percent of diagnosed breast cancers and 89 percent of breast cancer deaths.

"Houston Methodist West Hospital is committed to bringing awareness to our community on the importance of breast care", said Kim Collins, director of the Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at West.

To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the brand is also opening its "Shop for the Greater Goods", an exclusive boutique featuring limited-edition Pink Hope fundraising products available through Avon Representatives. The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center receives grant funds from Avon Breast Cancer Crusade to provide women with education about and access to breast health services.

The BCCA's mission is to eliminate breast cancer by focusing on educating, empowering and encouraging all women to become proactive in preventing and, if diagnosed, surviving breast cancer.

"We have special shirts with pink lettering", said Kauai Fire Battalion Chief Jason Ornellas whose wife Mary Ann is a survivor.

Risk factors for developing breast cancer are age, family history, and being overweight. The charitable contributions received from the pink patches go to community efforts to benefit cancer research, prevention and treatment. "We are proud to help and be a part of this very worthy effort".

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime.

"It is not a form of cancer, but it is a growth under the nipple and you can either feel it or it can by seen and it is painful", she said.

She added, "Studies have shown that 3D mammography assists in detecting breast cancer earlier than images acquired with conventional mammogram technology, and the technology reduces false-positive scans".
